In celebration of Halloween, Jow and I have been watching a ton of old horror movies on TMC. My past faves have been The Dunwich Horror (Sandra Dee! Orgies and magic in the 70's!) and I Walked With a Zombie. I love all the "magic hair" as Kathy Griffin would say and the complete disregard to being at all period appropriate. Jekyll and Hyde with Ingrid Bergman is a really honestly terrifying psychological thriller. But what I really love, in case you couldn't tell, is that mysterious combination of horror and humor. I love a horror movie that's not afraid to be campy, that's not afraid to be witty and that's not afraid to make you actually like the characters, especially the villains. I like it especially when it's ambiguous as to who the villain really is. Examples of this would be: the first season of American Horror Story (this season is less sassy and more scary which I haven't been as into), Ginger Snaps (the whole trilogy), Scream (of course), I Know What You Did Last Summer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel (of course), The Craft, Arsenic and Old Lace and of course, my fave, Jennifer's Body.
Newly added to the horror/humor list would be the Vincent Price version of The Raven. If you've ever been curious about what magical conversations between Jow and I look like, the exchanges between Vincent Price and Peter Lorre are pretty spot on. Start at minute 25 and go to minute 30 to get one of the better conversations.
