In celebration of Halloween, Jow and I have been watching a ton of old horror movies on TMC. My past faves have been The Dunwich Horror (Sandra Dee! Orgies and magic in the 70's!) and I Walked With a Zombie. I love all the "magic hair" as Kathy Griffin would say and the complete disregard to being at all period appropriate. Jekyll and Hyde with Ingrid Bergman is a really honestly terrifying psychological thriller. But what I really love, in case you couldn't tell, is that mysterious combination of horror and humor. I love a horror movie that's not afraid to be campy, that's not afraid to be witty and that's not afraid to make you actually like the characters, especially the villains. I like it especially when it's ambiguous as to who the villain really is. Examples of this would be: the first season of American Horror Story (this season is less sassy and more scary which I haven't been as into), Ginger Snaps (the whole trilogy), Scream (of course), I Know What You Did Last Summer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel (of course), The Craft, Arsenic and Old Lace and of course, my fave, Jennifer's Body.
Newly added to the horror/humor list would be the Vincent Price version of The Raven. If you've ever been curious about what magical conversations between Jow and I look like, the exchanges between Vincent Price and Peter Lorre are pretty spot on. Start at minute 25 and go to minute 30 to get one of the better conversations. Bonus if you can guess who is who!
